Twitter has announced that it has decided it won’t continue supporting it’s Mac App in favour of pushing users to their website.
This is both interesting and crazy.
Tweetbot has a beta out for Mac which I’m sure the Twitter Mac App is losing users to every day. All this comes in the wake of Twitter continuing to piss off developers with API changes. But I’m not totally surprised by this, they are crazy enough to think Twitter is a platform from which the next great big idea will be born. The Obvious boys are definitely thinking big with Medium and Branch launching recently. Even still, why kill the Mac App?
On the other side of the coin is Google. Google just bought Sparrow because it knows Sparrow is a superior client that Gmail users were leaving their web app and shitty iOS client for. Google accepted that they lost the battle to Sparrow and bought them up. Hopefully it’s all for the good of the user.
The funny thing is, Twitter is doing the exact opposite. They are shutting down their Mac App to force users to the web app. You guys bought Tweetie and then basically killed it. Now you’re killing it again. The iPad app hasn’t changed in forever, either.
C’mon, Jack. Make us believe in you again.
